PokerStars has long been credited as one of the most poker downloads available. Running fun promotions is a priority for them, and they are always looking for ways to make the game just that much more entertaining. One of their longest running promotions is the World Cup of Poker.
The World Cup of Poker offers recreational players the chance to play for their country against other countries at the poker table. People that love sandy destinations will be happy to hear that the big event takes place on Paradise Island during the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA).
PokerStars named the World Cup of Poker after the prestigious soccer event of similar name. The popular sport inspired the names of different positions that are on each country’s team. To earn one of the four spots on a given country’s team, a player was required to play on the PokerStars download and finish 1st in an online satellite. These satellites were schedule for August 20th and 21st, which means they have already taken place.
The first three positions were open to any and all players. To win the goalkeeper position, tournament was a mere freeroll. To play the tourney for the defender position, players had to pitch in $1.10. Furthermore, the midfielder position required an $11 buy-in. All of the events were No Limit Hold’em.
The striker position was the final position, but it was only available to a select group of people. To become a striker for your country, you would have needed to get top ten in the yearly TLB for your country in 2010.
Since all the positions are now filled, countries have been filed into 7 groups and pitted against each other. There will be poker tournaments in which players of the same positions will play each other within each group. To receive a spot in the live final on Paradise Island, a country must do the best in their group. In total seven teams will make the cut.
Once they get to Paradise Island, each team will get a member of Team PokerStars added to their team as their captain. The teams will compete for $290,000 in total prize money with $100,000 for the winning team to share.
